"Vorreiter, widerwilliges Muster, seufzendes Opfer ihres eigenen Erfolges" nannte Hans Magnus Enzensberger in seinem Essay "Mittelmaß und Wahn. Ein Vorschlag zur Güte" (1988) die Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Was zeichnete die "alte" Bundesrepublik Deutschland aus? Die Vorlesung rekonstruiert die Entstehung und Entwicklung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (1949-1989) aus einer Politik-, Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte verknüpfenden Perspektive. Ein besonderer Akzent wird auf die Kritik ausgewählter Intellektueller gelegt, die mit ihren Kommentaren die Entwicklung der Republik begleiteten.
