Die kognitiven Linguisten George Lakoff und Mark L. Johnson untersuchen in ihrer grundlegenden Studie Metaphors We Live By (1980) – auf Deutsch erschienen als Leben in Metaphern. Konstruktion und Gebrauch von Sprachbildern – das Alltagsleben auf der Grundlage einer Taxonomie metaphorischer Rede. 2016 hat Lakoff einen möglichen Wahlerfolg Donald Trumps frühzeitig vorausgesagt.
Das Seminar beschäftigt sich ausführlich mit der Metapherntheorie von Lakoff/Johnson, um an ausgewählten Texten von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart kritisch zu überprüfen, inwiefern deren Ansatz einer kognitionswissenschaftlichen Verknüpfung von Metaphern, Narrativen und Emotion zur Analyse öffentlicher Rede beitragen kann. Die große Bedeutung von Bilderreden – u. a. den konzeptualisierenden Metaphern in unserer Kommunikation – wird vorausgesetzt und zugleich zum Gegenstand der Untersuchung gemacht. Darüber hinaus bietet die Lehrveranstaltung einen ersten Einblick in das Feld der Metapherntheorie.
