When did women become subjects of study within Holocaust studies and the history of National Socialism? What are the standard historiographical works, and how has research developed in recent decades, in Germany and beyond?
In this (Block)seminar, we will explore historiography on women and the Holocaust, delving into accounts and analyses on Jewish victims, as well as women perpetrators, accomplices, and bystanders. Particular attention will be devoted to women's agency, narratives and subjectivities. We will both reflect on relevant concepts, categories, perspectives and debates conveyed by recent and less recent scientific works, and focus on sources (both coeval and retrospective accounts).
The seminar texts will be in English and in German, although mostly in English. The discussions will be held entirely in English. Students will have the option of taking the (oral) examination in the language in which they feel most comfortable.
Willingness and motivation to engage in discussions in English. Perfect language knowledge is not required.
