230728 English: English Academic Writing II (S) (WiSe 2019/2020)

Contents, comment

This course is open to all levels, but a minimum of English level B2 is recommended.

We will use a variety of writing exercises each week as well as various homework exercises that will develop our skills in:
- analyzing texts for content and meaning
- extracting the important information
- organizing and structuring the information
- writing analyses and summaries organized and structured in style of standard English academic writing.

Regular participation in the sessions plus the completion of a portfolio of assigned writing tasks are required. The tasks include:
- 2 major writing projects: a short story analysis and an article summary which compares two sides of a topic

Requirements for participation, required level

One of the following - either 1 or 2
1) Successful completion of the English Academic Writing I course
2) Permission of the instructor - this can be arranged at the first class or with an email request to the instructor.

NOTE: A c-test (placement test) result is not required for this course.

"Academic Writing in English II" is the sequel to "Academic Writing in English I." This writing course will develop your academic writing skills -- improving both your writing confidence and technique.
English writing uses specific structures and organizational techniques that are often different from other languages.
This course will explain and provide advanced knowledge of how English is constructed and teach you important writing and analysis methods which professional writers use.
This will include techniques you can use in your career to continually analyze and improve the quality of your writing.
