261033 Historical Epistemology (S) (SoSe 2010)

Contents, comment

Epistemology is commonly understood as an inquiry into the conditions required for knowledge, where these conditions are taken to be universal, applying at all places and at all times. ‘Historical epistemology’ is the name given to a diverse body of work in recent history and philosophy of science which, in one way or another, attempts to show knowledge to be historically situated. For example, it has been argued that a key epistemological concept, objectivity, rather than being a universal standard that is essential to science, instead emerged during the nineteenth century in response to concerns specific to that period.

In this course we will explore this new area of research and its implications through engaging with recent work by authors such as Lorraine Daston and Peter Galison, Ian Hacking, Hasok Chang, and Hans-Jörg Rheinberger.
