Der umstrittene Begriff der Elite erfährt in der Erziehungswissenschaft seit etwa zwei Jahrzehnten gesteigerte Aufmerksamkeit. Dabei erscheint Elite seltener als theoretisches Konzept, sondern vielmehr als ein Kampfbegriff mit „magischer“ Qualität (Helsper, 2009). Er wird zum einen machtkritisch ablehnend diskutiert (Ricken, 2009), und die in Politik und Öffentlichkeit bisweilen offen geforderte Elitenbildung wird skeptisch beäugt. Zum anderen ist allerorten ein Bemühen um Exzellenz zu bemerken, wobei unklar und diskursiv umkämpft bleibt, ob es sich dabei nicht nur um ein glanzvolleres Abziehbild desselben handelt (Hartmann, 2007; Peter, 2019). Ausgehend von theoretisch-reflexiven Überlegungen zu Begriffen wie Bildungselite, Elite(n)bildung und Exzellenz widmen wir uns im Seminar schwerpunktmäßig einer empirisch-analytischen Perspektive auf die ‚oberen Ränge‘ der Gesellschaft (Krais, 2003) und auf die Bedingungen und Mechanismen der Reproduktion von Privilegien, Status, Herrschaft und Reichtum. Hierzu nehmen wir eine Reihe von Studien in den Blick, die sich mit der Sozialisation und Bildung von Elite in Familie, Internaten, Hochschulen und anderen Orten der institutionellen Bildung, Betreuung und Erziehung befassen. Die Auswahl der Studien reicht von ethnografischen Erkundungen eines amerikanischen Eliteinternats (z. B. Khan, 2010) über die Erforschung von Internationalisierung als Distinktionsstrategie von Kindertageseinrichtungen in Deutschland (Mierendorff et al., 2018) bis hin zu Konstruktionen von ‚Eliteness‘ in Schulen und Familien im Globalen Süden (z. B. Ayling, 2016). Abschließend diskutieren wir, wie Elitenbildung und Elitenreproduktion nicht nur Gesellschaft, sondern damit auch Kindheit und Jugend auf spezifische Weise strukturieren.
