Die sozialwissenschaftliche Bildung hat drei Bezugsdisziplinen. Im Gegensatz zur Politikwissenschaft und Ökonomie wird die Soziologie oftmals stiefmütterlich behandelt. Das Seminar versucht einen Beitrag dazu zu leisten, den Wert der Soziologie für die sozialwissenschaftliche Bildung herauszustellen. Hierfür werden wir uns mit aktuellen Gesellschaftdiagnosen und ihrer Bildungsrelevanz auseinandersetzen. Auch wenn Gesellschaftsdiagnosen in der Soziologie als "unseriöses Geschäft" gelten (Bogner 2015), können sie den Lernenden Orientierung für die Auseinandersetzung mit und das Handeln in Gesellschaft bieten. Wie dies gelingt/gelingen kann, soll im Seminar erarbeitet werden. Folgende Inhalte werden in diesem Zusammenhang bearbeitet:
- Was ist eine Gesellschaftsdiagnose? Worin bestehen Chancen und Grenzen von Gesellschaftsdiagnosen?
- Aktuelle Gesellschaftsdiagnosen (u.a. Risikogesellschaft, Arbeitsgesellschaft, Konsumgesellschaft)
- Fachdidaktische Zugänge zu den Gesellschaftsdiagnosen

Das Seminar verfolgt das Ziel eigenaktiver, selbstständiger Arbeit - oftmals auch in Kleingruppen. Um eine inhaltlich fruchtbare Arbeit während der Sitzungen zu gewährleisten, ist die Bearbeitung der Basistexte sowie die aktive Mitarbeit während der Sitzungen zwingende Voraussetzung. Im Laufe des Seminars werden Präsentationen vorbereitet, die zeitgleich die Studienleistung darstellen. Ohne aktive, regelmäßige Teilnahme ist daher keine Vergabe der Studienleistung möglich.
