COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is an introduction to psycho-oncology. Topics include the psychosocial impact of cancer, communication in cancer care, survivorship, grief and bereavement, and psychosocial interventions for cancer patients.

COURSE AIMS

• To identify common psychological problems among cancer patients and their close ones.

• To become familiar with essential communication skills for working with cancer patients.

• To become familiar with cancer survivorship care.

• Acquire a basic knowledge of the most common psychosocial interventions for cancer patients and their underlying theoretical frameworks.

There is no textbook. The readings are available on internet links.

EVALUATION:

Credit/No Credit will be awarded according to the following criteria:

• Class participation and assignments (50%): This course will be based on reading the materials assigned accordingly. Students are expected to read the required materials prior to class and engage in informed participation.

• Individual presentations (50%): Each student will present a topic related to psychooncology in class as assigned. The presentation should be in PowerPoint format, and it can last between 90 + 120 minutes.
