Dieser Kurs wird sich mit zwei überlagernden Phänomenen auseinandersetzen: Zum einen der Geschichte des Drag und zum anderen des "dragging" oder "queering" von Geschichte selbst. „Drag“ wird hier als ein Spiel mit Signifikanten verstanden, das sich meist auf Gender bezieht, sich aber auch auf andere Differenzkategorien (class, race) übertragen lässt. Als Form der Übertreibung weist Drag eine Nähe zu den ästhetischen Kategorien des Kitsch und Camp auf.
Dafür werden wir grundlegende Texte der Gender und Queer Studies zu Drag als Performance lesen (Butler, hooks) sowie uns mit Fragen queerer Zeitlichkeit und Geschichtsschreibung (Muñoz, Hartmann) auseinandersetzen. Wir werden uns fragen, wie Drag in der Kunst, in Film und Fernsehen verhandelt wird. Dazu werden wir uns mittlerweile kanonisch gewordene Darstellungen von Drag und der Ballroomszene ansehen, z.B. Paris is Burning (1990), RuPauls Drag Race (2009 – jetzt) oder Pose (2018-2021).
Mögliche weitere Themenschwerpunkte könnten Class und Race Drag in der Kunstgeschichte sein.
Voraussetzung für den Kurs ist die Bereitschaft, auch schwierige und englischsprachige Texte zu lesen. Eigene Themenvorschläge oder Beispiele sind höchst erwünscht.
