Warum haben Menschen gebaut, wie sie bauten und welcher Zeitgeist führte dazu? In dem Seminar wird eben dieser Frage auf den Grund gegangen werden. Anhand ausgewählter Architekturphasen und -strömungen von der Kaiserzeit bis hin zur deutsch-deutschen Wiedervereinigung soll vor dem Hintergrund politischer, gesellschaftlicher und sozialer Veränderungen der Zusammenhang zwischen architektonischen Entwicklungen und der deutschen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts nachgezeichnet werden. Konkrete architektonische Beispiele werden dazu im historischen Kontext verortet, um so die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungsprozessen und Architektur zu analysieren.
Das Seminarthema verlangt von den Teilnehmern keine spezifischen Vorkenntnisse, ein fundiertes Basiswissen zur deutschen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts wird jedoch vorausgesetzt. Ebenso wie die Bereitschaft zur aktiven Textlektüre und -vorbereitung.
