Die Bedeutung der französischen Sprache und Kultur für die deutschsprachige Literatur der Moderne ist kaum zu überschätzen. In die wichtigsten europäischen Literaturströmungen um 1900 (Ästhetizismus, Décadence, Symbolismus, Jugendstil) wird das Blockseminar einführen. Ein Schwerpunkt wird auf der Lyrik Baudelaires, Mallarmés, Rimbauds, Valérys und Verlaines und deren Rezeption durch Benn, George, G. Heym, Rilke und Trakl liegen. Im Blickpunkt werden insbesondere auch Rilkes Übertragungen, seine sogenannten "Doppeldichtungen" und seine bis heute wenig bekannten französischsprachigen Gedichte stehen. Von den Teilnehmern des Seminars wird engagierte Mitarbeit erwartet. Textgrundlage ist ein Reader, der in der vorbereitenden Sitzung erworben werden kann. Französischkenntnisse sind von Vorteil. (Die Juli-Termine in den Semesterferien können gegebenenfalls durch Wochenendtermine ersetzt werden; darüber wird in der vorbereitenden Sitzung zu sprechen sein.)
