The reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) marks one of the most profound periods of change on the British Isles. This course aims at tracing the development of literary and cultural history by examining key texts of the long 19th century. As we expand our toolkit for analysing and interpreting different types of prose, poetry and drama, we will encounter salient societal matters of the period, such as gender dynamics, imperialism, technological advancement, urbanisation and more. The reading list will include texts by Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, Christina Rossetti, Oscar Wilde and others.
It is recommend that you attend Basis 2.1 "Introduction to Literary Analysis and Interpretation" first before attending this class.
