Tschechien zählt seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zu den hochentwickelten Industrieregionen Europas, auch noch während der sozialistischen Phase der Landesgeschichte zwischen 1948 und 1989. Insbesondere Nordböhmen ist in diesen 40 Jahren zu einem hoch verdichteten Schwerindustriestandort ausgebaut worden. Seit der Wende durchläuft die Region eine tiefgreifende Transformation: politisch von der Plan- zur Marktwirtschaft, strukturell von der Schwerindustrie zu einem Dienstleistungszentrum und räumlich von einer Grenzregion hin zu einem Brückenraum, in dem künftig im Rahmen der Oberweiterung der EU ein neues Netzwerk im alten Grenzdreieck zwischen Deutschland (Sachsen), Polen (Schlesien) und Tschechien (Böhmen) entsteht.
