Die römische Antike war eine städtische Kultur; das Leben war auf die Stadt ausgerichtet: Hier hielt man die Ratssitzungen ab, traf sich im Theater, bot seine Produkte und Erzeugnisse an, schloss sich zu Vereinen zusammen und nahm an den wichtigen religiösen Festen teil. Die Beschäftigung mit der römischen Stadt berührt also die antike Wirtschafts-, Sozial-, Religions-, Rechts- und Alltagsgeschichte. Das Modul nähert sich dem Phänomen „römische Stadt“ in drei Schritten. Zunächst werden Grundlagen der römischen Geschichte wiederholt, dann theoretische Konzepte vorgestellt und diese dann abschließend an ausgewählten Beispielen erprobt.
