Die griechische Welt der Antike ist durch eine Fülle von phantastischen Geschichten geprägt, die wir üblicherweise dem Mythos zuordnen, sich aber auch in verschiedenen Literaturgattungen wiederfinden. Immer wieder gab und gibt es Versuche, diese Geschichten irgendwie zu erklären, zu rationalisieren und in einen nachvollziehbaren historischen Kontext einzuordnen. Auch die Archäologie wird in jüngerer Zeit wieder intensiv bemüht, um etwa der Gestalt des Minotaurus oder die Einäugigkeiot der Kyklopen eine lebensweltliche Grundlage zu verschaffen. Das Seminar wird diese Versuche an mehreren prominenten Beispielen von der minoischen Bronzezeit und Archaik bis in die klassisch-hellenistische Zeit verfolgen und dazu die entsprechenden Texte und Materialgrundlagen interpretieren.
