Im Seminar geht es zum einen um die Frage, welche Gewaltformen in ‚der Moderne‘ auftreten. Zum anderen geht es um die Frage, ob und auf welche Weise das Selbstverständnis, modern zu sein, systematisch mit verschiedenen Formen von Gewalt verknüpft ist. Anhand von theoretischen Texten und Fallbeispielen können wir einerseits historische Phänomene wie unterschiedliche Kriegsformen, Kolonialismus und Dekolonisierung oder auch Sklaverei in der atlantischen Welt und ihre Abschaffung diskutieren. Andererseits, und damit verbunden, werden wir die Rolle von Geschlecht, ‚Rasse‘ oder anderen konstitutiven Dimensionen analysieren, mithilfe derer Menschen ihre moderne Welt organisierten, häufig in Form von Hierarchien und miteinander verknüpften Formen von Inklusion und Exklusion.
