From the late nineteenth century on, social unrest shaped the Americas profoundly. The course will give an overview on the complex history of protest and social movements, their goals and achievements, and their entanglements between the U.S. and Latin America, ranging from women’s movements, civil rights movements, environmental movements, indigenous movements, students’ movements, and liberation theology to revolutions in Mexico and Cuba.
