The focus of the seminar is placed on space-time philosophy and the philosophy of quantum theory. In the first part, we will discuss the philosophical understanding of space and time as it arose in the context of classical mechanics. We will reconstruct the classical debate between Newton and Leibniz and continue with Mach’s objections and their transformation within Einstein’s general theory of relativity.
In the second part, we will focus on notions such as superpositions, entanglement, nonseparability, incompatibility of quantum states or observables as well as the notorious collapse of the wave function. We will approach the mysteries of quantum states from various angles (Copenhagen Interpretation, many-worlds, Bohm, decoherence).
The matter and the debate needs to be a bit more advanced and technical in some instances, but the philosophical approaches and puzzles will always be accessible without sophisticated knowledge of physics.
