250267 Classroom and School Mechanisms behind Educational Inequality (S) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

This course delves into the multifaceted mechanisms influencing educational inequality, mainly at the primary school level. Participants will develop a nuanced understanding of how the educational system shapes academic achievement through a multilevel lens, recognizing and interpreting various mechanisms contributing to differential achievement at both classroom and school levels.

The course unfolds with an exploration of the multilevel structure within schools, providing insights into the organizational dynamics and their impact on educational outcomes. Moving into the specifics, the course addresses classroom mechanisms, covering the effects of student composition, teacher-related factors, socio-physical conditions, and the implemented curriculum on academic performance. Then, shifting focus to school-level mechanisms, the course addresses the impact of student composition, teacher composition, socio-physical conditions, school management, climate, and curriculum and instruction on educational outcomes.

Throughout the course, participants engage in discussions exploring the potential impact of each mechanism and strategies to mitigate negative effects. The learning environment fosters open yet respectful dialogue, encouraging students to draw on personal experiences related to these mechanisms.

By the course's conclusion, students will possess comprehensive knowledge of the multilevel factors at both classroom and school levels, influencing educational inequality. Gaining such comprehensive understanding, students will be equipped to critically assess and address these mechanisms, hopefully contributing to the creation of a more equitable educational landscape.
