In der historischen Imagination der Deutschen bildet das 17. Jahrhundert ein "dunkles Säkulum", geprägt vom Dreißigjährigen Krieg, von Seuchen, religiösen Auseinandersetzungen und politischen Krisen. Weniger bekannt sind die "lichten Seiten" seiner Geschichte in Philosophie, politischem Denken, Kunst und Architektur. Im Rahmen der Vorlesung soll versucht werden, einen Überblick über die wichtigsten politischen, sozialen, religiösen und kulturellen Entwicklungen im 17. Jahrhundert zu geben. Im Zentrum steht das Reich, es werden jedoch immer wieder Seitenblicke auf die europäischen Nachbarländer zu werfen sein. Die Vorlesung richtet sich an Studierende aller Semester
