230626 Colloquium: Topics in Contemporary Linguistics (Ko) (WiSe 2006/2007)

Contents, comment

Objectives

The aim of the Colloquium is to engage in critical discussion on topics and methods of current interest in all areas of linguistics. Topics in past semesters have ranged widely from experimental phonetics to semantics, and from Optimality Theory to the documentation of endangered languages.

In addition to the theoretical and methodological objectives, the Colloquium has the practical goal of giving participants the opportunity to practise their presentation skills before a critical audience in such a way that they will be able to acquire confidence in facing examinations and other audiences of experts.
Organisation

In accordance with the objectives, in past semesters the organisation of the Colloquium has centred on presentations by participants on topics on which they are working for their B.A., M.A. and doctoral theses, as well as for scientific journal articles and conference or workshop presentations.

In this semester, one focus will also be on using modern computational methods in various areas of linguistics, in order to save tome, cover more data, and make more precise linguistic models. Discussion will focus on the use of such methods in the areas of interest of the participants.
Addressees
Registration is not strictly necessary for this Colloquium. The Colloquium is aimed at scientifically interested and motivated advanced students from B.A. level onwards. Attendance is not restricted to students of English; participants from other areas concerned with language and linguistics are very welcome.
Participation and Qualification
Programme
