Climatic and environmental circumstances played an enormous role in the colonial world of the European expansion (after 1492). In our historical contextualisation we will look at multiple contexts, where both these dimensions of colonial life were discussed. They also informed action on the part of colonial powers. Typical contexts were struggles over slavery, the distribution of people in the colonies and resource issues. This course will mainly be looking into source material related to these and other subjects. The participants will be asked to prepare the subject of each class mostly independently and bring the information they have gathered to the (virtual) classroom.
