Die üblicherweise als Stimmqualität bezeichneten stimmlichen Eigenschaften sind solche, welche über einen längeren Zeitraum hinweg die gesprochene Sprache "einfärben", indem der Vokaltrakt in ein bestimmtes "Setting" gebracht wird.
Alltagssprachliche Beschreibungen für Stimmqualitäten sind z.B. "Flüstern, Hauchen, Näseln, Knödeln" oder die berühmte "heiße Kartoffel im Mund". Durch den Einsatz bestimmter Stimmqualitäten werden u.a. hierarchische Gefüge zwischen Sprechern etabliert, die Zugehörigkeit zu einer bestimmten Gruppe oder Sprachgemeinschaft ausgedrückt und emotionale Befindlichkeiten oder Attitüden zum Ausdruck gebracht.
Der Kurs umfaßt folgende Inhalte:
- Systematische Beschreibung von Stimmqualitäten (artikulatorisch, akustisch und perzeptiv) nach dem System von Laver
- Experimentelle Untersuchung der kommunikativen Funktion von Stimmqualität anhand kleinerer Experimente
