Communism, one of the most influential ideologies of the 20th century, sought to create the new men and women, and suggested complex if incoherent visions of masculinities and femininities, which visions were taken up by aspiring communist regimes all across the globe. Reconceptualized under the influence of particular societal norms, the emerging gender regimes clearly transformed the lives of many, and these changes featured prominently within the cultural Cold War.
In this course, surveying Latin American, European, African and Asian settings, we delve into the lifeworlds of women under communism, while men will feature marginally as well. Contrasting policies, large-scale outcomes and individual testimonies, we explore the key characteristics of these gender regimes, while remaining sensitive to their varieties.

The course is part of the Modul 22-2.1 Theoriemodul, and therefore, the exam regulations of the module apply to it. The examination takes place jointly with another course from the module's offerings.
"As a rule, the module is completed with an oral examination and, in exceptional cases for well-grounded requests, with an essay.
The examination refers to both seminar courses and is jointly assessed by the lecturers of both courses.
The oral examination lasts 30 minutes, the essay comprises approx. 20,000 characters (10 pages).
An oral examination is prepared by submitting a paper in advance, as specified by the organizer. If the courses of the module extend over two semesters, the examination can be divided into two partial examinations, each of which is taken by one of the two organizers and assessed in an overall assessment of both parts by the lecturer of the "Grundseminar Theorien in der Geschichtswissenschaft"."
