This MA seminar, "Work Contracts: Theories, Practices, and Divergences," offers an exploration of work contracts through a sociological lens. Intended for advanced MA students with a background in classical economic sociology and the sociology of work and labour markets, the course will delve into relevant theories and empirical studies concerning contracts.
The seminar is divided into 4 parts. Part 1 explores the relationship between legal and sociological concepts, providing a foundational understanding of their intersection. In Part 2, the discussion shifts to a classic debate in sociology, focusing on the dichotomy between status and contracts, encouraging students to engage with classical concepts and debates to enhance their familiarity with foundational topics. Part 3 introduces perspectives from critical legal theory and social constructionism, offering insights into how laws are interpreted and constructed within societal contexts. The final part of the seminar is designed to foster critical thinking by challenging Eurocentric views on work contracts. Part 4 invites students to apply their learning by examining literature on informal and illegal markets, evaluating the utility of the concept of contracts within these non-traditional market settings.
Students will develop critical thinking skills by engaging with the suggested texts and critically evaluating the possibilities and limitations of grand theories. Through active participation, presentations, and term papers, students will enhance their understanding of the sociological implications of work contracts and their diverse forms across different contexts.
