Die Vorlesung ist als Einführung in die Prophetie angelegt und bietet einen Überblick zur Entwicklung der Prophetie und der Religionsgeschichte Israel-Judas.
Nach grundsätzlichen Überlegungen zu den Besonderheiten prophetischer Überlieferung wird die prophetische Wirksamkeit zwischen dem achten und vierten Jahrhundert v.Chr. skizziert. Im Mittelpunkt der Vorlesung steht das Zwölfprophetenbuch, seine Entstehung, Komposition und Auslegung. Dieses Buch ist sowohl eine Widerspiegelung der Geschichte der Prophetie wie auch ein prophetischer Kommentar zur Geschichte Israel-Judas. Die unterschiedlichen theologischen Positionen zu Leitthemen wie Sünde, Umkehr, Alleinverehrung JHWHs werden anhand von Texten aus den Büchern Amos, Hosea, Zephanja, Joel und Jona vorgeführt.
