The rise of the short story went hand in hand with the mechanization of the printing press and mass publication. The many newspapers and magazines had a great demand for stories that could be published in a single column or in several columns on one page. In the 19th century the narratives were to a great extent Gothic tales or sensational stories, pulp fiction, later the genre developed into an art form. This course will examine short stories from the 19th through to the 21st century, with an excursion into Caribbean short stories.
All texts must be read by the beginning of the seminar.
