Wie hängen Geist und Körper miteinander zusammen? Handelt es sich um zwei verschiedenartige Substanzen? Wenn ja, wie wirken diese aufeinander ein? Und wenn nicht, wie kann das, was wir mit dem „Geist“ oder der „Seele“ meinen, rein materialistisch erklärt werden? Im Seminar sollen historische Texte gelesen werden, die sich mit den genannten Fragen beschäftigen. Ein Schwerpunkt wird dabei auf Descartes’ dualistischer Konzeption und den Einwänden Elisabeth von Böhmens liegen. Neben Texten von frühneuzeitlichen Autoren und Autorinnen sollen aber auch Beiträge aus dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert gelesen werden, um die Geschichte des Problems zu rekonstruieren.
Die Bereitschaft zur Lektüre und Diskussion von englischsprachigen Texten wird vorausgesetzt.

Abschluss des ersten Studienjahres (beide Grundkurse, Philosophischer Einstieg und Philosophisches Schreiben).
