Man könnte die frühe Neuzeit das "Zeitalter der Imperien" nennen. Nie zuvor haben so viele bedeutende Imperien – das Osmanische Reich, das Chinesische Kaiserreich, die europäischen Kolonialimperien – so ausgedehnte Territorien beherrscht und organisiert wie im Zeitraum 1450 bis 1800. Natürlich existierten einige dieser Imperien lange vor Beginn der frühen Neuzeit. Andere entstanden aber auch erst. Letzteres gilt etwa für das spanische, portugiesische, französische und das britische Imperium. Imperien waren Antriebskräfte für globale Vernetzung, insbesondere im Bereich des Handels, für die Bildung neuer Institutionen und für historische Veränderungen im Allgemeinen. Insofern kommt ihnen in der Globalgeschichte der frühen Neuzeit eine Schlüsselrolle zu. Das zeichnet sich heute als eine Art Grundkonsens der historischen Forschung ab. Anstöße für die Erforschung historischer Imperien kamen nach dem Ende des Kalten Krieges aus der Politikwissenschaft und anderen Disziplinen, zuvor bereits aus der Umweltgeschichte. Wir werden uns auch mit den Wurzeln der neueren Geschichte der Imperien befassen.
