Am Beispiel ausgewählter Kinderbücher und einzelner Bilderbücher wird die Entwicklung der Kinderliteratur im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert nachgezeichnet. Literaturwissenschaftliche Analysen der Primärtexte dienen dabei der Klärung von Gattungsfragen. Die Studierenden sollen ihre analytischen Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten, die sie aus der "Einführung in die germanistische Literaturwissenschaft" mitbringen, im Umgang mit bedeutenden kinderliterarischen Texten anwenden und vertiefen.
