Ethnographische Forschungsstrategien lassen sich zunächst von der radikalen Frage leiten "What the hell is going on here?" (Geertz 1983) - um soziale Ordnungen in einem (z.B. pädagogischen) Feld zu entdecken. Dieses Erkenntnisinteresse ist für die außerschulische Pädagogik insofern von Bedeutung, als Bildungsprozesse hier als "informell" und wenig greifbar gelten. In der Kinder- und Jugendarbeit wird nicht vorrangig auf Wissenserwerb fokussiert und die Teilnahme ist in der Regel freiwillig, so dass sie damit potentiell gute Bedingungen für selbstbestimmtes Lernen und Geselligkeit bietet. Im Seminar sollen nach einer Einführung in die Programmatik sozialwissenschaftlicher Ethnographie, exemplarische Forschungsprojekte diskutiert werden, die versuchen, Bildungsqualitäten in außerschulischen Feldern auf die Spur zu kommen. Dabei können (und sollen) auch Phänomene entdeckt werden, die "Eigensinnigkeiten" zeigen und erzieherische Programmatiken irritieren.
