270127 The psychology of social class (BS) (SoSe 2013)

Contents, comment

The topic of the seminar is the influence of social class in the development of psychological processes. For a long time, social class was a topic neglected by socio psychological research, but in the last few year there has been a new impulse to such a research area. Since then, social class has received a lot of attention for explaining how people face social interactions, the kind of social orientations they use, the different ways of differentiating status, or the bases of ethical behavioral, among others.
The seminar will concentrate on discussing the role of social class socialization on shaping multiple social and psychological processes. The first part of the seminar will concentrate on developing the basic concepts of class, class measurement, status, power, and social hierarchies. The second part will focus on distinguishing four different levels of analysis: individual level (psychological tendencies), interactional level, institutional level and ideological level. The third part of the seminar will include some concrete examples of the influence of social class on every day behavior (language, fashion, parenting, employment, and so on), ethical behavior, interclass encounters (e.g. what happen to a student with working-class background in a university predominantly middle class), ideologies like meritocracy, individualism, American dream and so on.
