Im Mittelpunkt der forschungsorientierten Vertiefung sollen chronische Krankheiten im Kindes- und Jugendalter (wie Diabetes mellitus, Asthma bronchiale, rheumatische Erkrankungen), die damit verbundenen psychosozialen Folgen sowie die Copingmechanismen stehen, die von Kindern und Jugendlichen zur Krankheitsbewältigung eingesetzt werden. Eingegangen werden soll weiterhin auf Formen sozialer Unterstützung bei der Krankheitsbewältigung, wobei hier nicht nur an die betroffenen Kinder und Jugendlichen gedacht ist, sondern auch an das familiäre Umfeld, das ebenfalls vielfach erhöhten Belastungen ausgesetzt ist.
