Die Veranstaltung führt in die Soziologie anhand der Religionssoziologie ein. Es geht ihr insbesondere um die Geltendmachung mikro- und makrosoziologischer Begrifflichkeiten und Fragestellungen (Interaktion, Organisation, Gesellschaft) auf dem religiösen Feld. Zugleich will die Veranstaltung die Teilnehmer empirisch heranführen an die Diversität und Pluralität der 'religiösen Landschaft' vor Ort in Bielefeld. Der Kurs hat über die theoretisch-konzeptionelle Arbeit hinaus einen starken Projektcharakter; er sieht - bezogen auf kleinere Feldstudien der Studierenden - intensive, auch von Tutorinnen und Tutoren betreute Kleingruppenarbeit vor. Bestandteil der Veranstaltung ist im übrigen eine Einführung in die Techniken wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens.
Der Kurs führt ein Projekt fort, das im WS 2003/04 begonnen worden ist.
In der Veranstaltung kann ein Schein für das Lehrgebiet 1.3 (spezielle Soziologien) erworben werden.

Die Veranstaltung ist an Studienanfänger des Diplomstudiengangs adressiert. Sie stellt die "projektorientierte Einführung in die Soziologie" (1.1.0) gem. der Studienordnung für den Diplomstudiengang dar.
