Dauer und Wandel von historischen Phänomenen wie Kolonien und Kolonialreichen sollen im epochenübergreifenden Blick thematisiert werden. Mittelalterliche Kontinuitäten von Eroberung, Besiedlung und Mission, aber auch neuzeitliche Dynamiken der Expansion und des Imperialismus können im diachronen Vergleich eine vormoderne und moderne Andersartigkeit aufzeigen. Europäische koloniale Gesellschaften und wirtschaftliche Verflechtungen von Kontinenten werden in ihrem wechselvollen Verhältnis zueinander betrachtet. Im Zentrum der zweisemestrigen Veranstaltung stehen die Schriftquellen, bildlichen Darstellungen und nichttextlichen Hinterlassenschaften dieser grundlegenden Beziehungen.
