This class is both an element in the FsB 2017, BM2 (2.3: Genres, Authors, Periods) as well as an element in the FsB 2022, Basis2 (2.3 Analyzing and Interpreting).
In this seminar, we are going to explore some of the central, canonical texts in North American literature to practice the nuts and bolts of literary analysis and interpretation. You will engage in close reading and practice the usage of literary terminology, methodology and theory by analyzing and interpreting different literary text types (poetry, drama, narrative texts).
I recommend that you attend Basis 2.1 "Introduction to Literary Analysis and Interpretation" first before attending this class.
Please buy or borrow a copy of Cormac McCarthy's novel Child of God (1973).
If not indicated otherwise, other primary and secondary texts will be made available in the seminar's Lernraum/Moodle.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
This is a reading-intensive seminar: Students will be expected to prepare a number of primary and secondary texts for each session in order to participate in class discussions and practice the academic discourse of our discipline.
