In der Übung wird ein Überblick über Phänomene der politischen Kommunikation erarbeitet. Dazu gehört einerseits das Zusammenspiel zwischen Politik und Medien, das als „symbolische Politik“, als „Mediatisierung der Politik“ gekennzeichnet wird oder sich auch in der Orientierung von Politik an „der öffentlichen Meinung“ findet. Andererseits wird aber auch das Politische insgesamt im Sinne von Luhmanns Systemtheorie als sich selbst stabilisierender und strukturierender und dabei von seiner gesellschaftlichen Umwelt abgrenzender Bereich rekonstruiert.
Im ersten Teil der Übung geht es darum, die Merkmale und Eigenwerte politischer Kommunikation herauszuarbeiten. Dazu gehört auch, dass Politik sich selbst als ein Spiel autonom handelnder Individuen (Akteure) konstruiert.
Der zweite Teil der Übung behandelt schwerpunktmäßig die strukturelle Kopplung zwischen Politik und Medien. Insgesamt wird dabei zumeist ein systemtheoretischer Blickwinkel eingenommen, der aber auch durch andere Sichtweisen ergänzt wird.

Anforderungen an den Scheinerwerb
Der Kurs ist vor allem lektüreorientiert.
Für die Bescheinigung einer aktiven Teilnahme wird erwartet, dass zu jeder Sitzung den Grundlagentext gelesen und sowohl die Grundthesen der Texte als auch Fragen zu den verwendeten Theorien und Methoden vorbereitet werden.
Für einen Leistungsschein müssen zusätzlich zwei Anforderungen erfüllt werden:
- Halten eines Impulsreferats (mit Powerpoint mit Bezug auf einen bis drei zusätzliche Texte, die vorab mit dem Dozenten abgestimmt werden)
- Schriftliche Ausarbeitung auf der Basis einer breiteren Lektüreliste (2400 Wörter).
