Die Musikgeschichte ist seit jeher geprägt durch die künstlerische Adaption bestehender Werke, die selbst vor großen Komponisten „klassischer Musik“ wie J. S. Bach oder W. A. Mozart nicht halt machte. In der „populären Musik“ hat die Weiterverarbeitung bestehenden Materials im Blues, Rock’n’Roll, Soul, Reggae, Musical über den Hip-Hop bis hin zu samplebasierten Pop-Songs und Electronic-Dance-Tracks gar einen zentralen Stellenwert eingenommen, wobei der Begriff der „Bearbeitung“, wie Peter Wicke im Handbuch populärer Musik (1997, S. 51) schreibt, häufig einen negativen Beigeschmack hat.
Das Seminar geht diesem Phänomen aus fachimmanenten, didaktischen und ästhetischen Perspektiven nach – zunächst rekonstruierend, später durch selbstständige Bearbeitungen –, um das ästhetische Potenzial und die Grenzen dieses künstlerischen Ansatzes zu evaluieren.
