Der Fragekomplex des Reduktionismus ist ein "Dauerbrenner" der zeitgenössischen theoretischen Philosophie wegen seiner weitreichenden Erstreckung in sowohl die allgemeine Wissenschaftstheorie als auch Philosophie der Naturwissenschaften und komplexen Wissenschaften sowie Philosophie des Geistes. Eng verzahnt mit den Fragen der Theorienreduktion und des Reduktionismus sind Begriffe und Themen wie Emergenz, Supervenienz, Einheit, Komplexität, Naturgesetze, Kausalität, multiple Realisierbarkeit und mentale Verursachung. Im Seminar soll der Fokus zunächst auf der Lektüre wichtiger Klassiker der wissenschaftstheoretischen Debatte wie Hempel, Nagel, Oppenheim oder Schaffner liegen, im weiteren Ausblick werden dann einige der oben genannten Einzelthematiken einbezogen.
Eine Leistungsbescheinigung (BA- oder Master of Education-Studiengang) wird für ausgearbeitete Referate oder Essayaufgaben ausgestellt.
