Das Seminar ist eine Einführung in die Poetik des modernen Romans am Beispiel von Alfred Döblins „Berlin Alexanderplatz“ (1929). Wir werden uns Schritt für Schritt durch den Text bewegen und ihn zugleich immer wieder literaturgeschichtlich kontextualisieren. Ein Schwerpunkt bildet dabei die Erkundung der ästhetischen und poetischen Besonderheiten des von Erich Kästner so genannten „Gegenwartsromans“, mit dem Döblin seine früher formulierten romantheoretischen Prämissen einlösen will. Diese Besonderheiten von „Berlin Alexanderplatz“ bringen den Text in die Nähe von anderen bedeutenden modernen Romanen, wie etwa James Joyce „Ulysses“ (Engl. 1918-20, Dt. 1927) oder John Dos Passos „Manhattan Transfer“ (Engl. 1925/ Dt. 1927), die Döblin beim Schreiben inspiriert haben sollen. Mit diesen Texten werden wir „Berlin Alexanderplatz“ punktuell in Beziehung setzen. Weiterhin rücken auch filmische Adaptionen des Romans in den Blick, deren Darstellungslogiken wiederum mit seinem „Kinostil“ in Verbindung stehen. Die Verfilmungen werden wir in die Diskussion einbeziehen, mit dem Ziel, die Ästhetik und Poetik des modernen Romans durch den Medienvergleich differenzierter beschreiben und analysieren zu können.
