Ende der 1980er Jahre kam es in Deutschland erstmals zu einem öffentlichen Skandal, in dessen Mittelpunkt ein Philosoph stand. Der australische Bioethiker Peter Singer vertrat in seinem Buch "Praktische Ethik" Thesen, die von vielen Menschen als nicht hinnehmbar angesehen wurden. Veranstaltungen wurden gestürmt und Singer an Vorträgen gehindert. Eine Zeit lang stand in manchen Kreisen die gesamte Angewandte Ethik unter Verdacht, verfassungsfeindliche Ansichten zu propagieren.
Inzwischen ist das Buch in dritter Auflage erschienen, längst ein moderner Klassiker der Philosophie, ohne allerdings an Radikalität eingebüßt zu haben. In dem Seminar soll das Buch in deutscher Übersetzung Kapitel für Kapitel gelesen und als Grundlage für intensive thematische Diskussionen genutzt werden.
Die Anschaffung der deutschen oder englischen Ausgabe ist erforderlich.
