The seminar is dedicated to the history of ideas, the social construction and practice of "race" and racism in the Americas, as well as various counter-designs. From a cultural studies perspective, approaches to the intertwined dimensions of ethnicity, race, gender, class, and religion in the field of "Blackness", "Afrodescendencia" and indigeneity will be discussed and examined through social practices of inclusion and exclusion. The focus is on literary and cultural examples as well as media representations (e.g. the Harlem Renaissance, Afrocubanismo, Hip Hop) on the one hand and, on the other hand, on social movements whose actors and practices refer to ethnic affiliations, traditions, attributions of self and other, and experiences of racial discrimination and develop corresponding forms of resistance. Starting from the transatlantic enslavement and colonial period, developments in the 20th and 21st centuries will be examined with a focus on global interdependencies, for example through migration and new media, etc.. On the basis of selected examples in the field of activism against racism like #BlackLivesMatter, Marielle Presente! or #SayHerName, and theoretical perspectives such as Critical Race Theory, Critical Whiteness, Intersectionality Theorizing, or Decolonial Aesthetics/Aistheisis current practices are discussed in the context of colonially shaped relations of domination and power.
The seminar takes place in presence ("vor Ort"), unless the Covid-19 restrictions prohibit it.
