The seminar examines the impact of education on Singapore’s transformation by studying the social, political & economic contexts within which policy and practice are embedded. It also examines key imperatives & principles that drove policy formulation, the success and failures of policy implementation, & how the state, at various times, fashioned education to meet its imperatives. Further, key education policy documents such as "Teach Less, Learn More"; "The Primary and Secondary Education Review & Implementation Report" and Information and Communications Technology masterplans are also analyzed, contextualized, and their importance for school development highlighted. Furthermore the seminar looks into the role of school leadership in Singapore with case studies from selected schools, that provide some insights on how Singapore delivers a high quality education that had led to it achieving high rankings in TIMMS & PISA. The sharing will provide both the historical and present contexts of changes in the educational system, school leadership and teacher leadership in Singapore that made it what it is today. Current events are also addressed, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, which has caused major disruptions in school operations worldwide, and this includes Singapore. The presentation will also include the learnings and challenges Singapore faced and how adapting very quickly to the pandemic allow Singapore to emerge even stronger than before. Some of these points are applicable to other parts of the world.

Please note that Kok Song Lee’s stay at Bielefeld University is mainly financed by the International Guest Lecturer Program and also in parts by the Faculty of Educational Science.
