230574 Harry Potter - the novels and the film adaptations. What happened to the Harry Potter books in the transition to the film medium? (StGr) (SoSe 2015)

Contents, comment

In this study group, we will consider the Harry Potter series with particular emphasis on the differences between constructing narrative in novels and films, and the constraints and opportunities presented by transforming lengthy written texts into a visual/auditory medium. With close analysis of key scenes and their realisation in the print and and film media, we could explore these questions, among others: What exactly was done in the film adaptation? What cuts were made, and why? What was added that was NOT in the original text, and why? How are events narrated, and how faithful is the dialogue and the representation of places and events to the original? How have novels that grew from the imagination of a single author, working alone, been transformed in the process of making of big-budget films with hundreds of people involved in their production? We will also exchange views on whether the adaptations do justice to the novels, sell them short, or indeed transcend them.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

articipants should have read some or all of the Harry Potter novels, preferably in English, and to have watched some or all of the film adaptations. For the “Studienleistung”, participants can research and briefly present theoretical approaches to the comparative analysis of novel and film (e.g. narrative in prose fiction and in film), or select, prepare and initiate the discussion of selected topics or of specific episodes in the novels and films.
