260052 Ethics of Letting Live and Letting Die (S) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

This is a course covering a range of topics in normative ethics. Specifically, we will consider questions regarding the moral status of actions that involve killing, letting die, or saving people. Here are some of the questions we will be discussing in this course: Are we morally required to save the greater number (are we required to pull the lever in the classic trolley case)? Is there an important difference between killing and letting die? To what extent are we permitted to harm others in defending ourselves and other people? What is the moral status of assisted suicide? Is abortion permissible?
