Die letzten 200 Jahre sind in Europa die Jahre der Verstädterung. Parallel zur Industrialisierung transformierten sich agrar-räumliche Strukturen in industriell-urbane, eine Entwicklung, die heute in Europa ihren Höhepunkt überschritten zu haben scheint und mit der Suburbanisierung in ihr Gegenteil sich zu verkehren scheint, während gleichzeitig in den außeneuropäischen Räumen die Hochphase der Verstädterung eingetreten ist. Das Seminar arbeitet das Thema zum einen am Beispiel der für Europa durchaus typischen Strukturen, Entwicklungen und Planungen von Bielefeld auf, um abschließend anhand einiger besonders aussagekräftiger Beispiele aus Lateinamerika, Afrika und Asien auch außereuropäische Urbanisierungen zu untersuchen.
