Gegenstand der auf zwei Semester angelegten Veranstaltung ist der heliozentrische Umbruch in Astronomie und Kosmologie im 16. Jahrhundert sowie die damit verknüpften Umorientierungen in der Physik und der Naturlehre generell. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Ptolemäische und Kopernikanische Astronomie, die Formulierung der Keplerschen Gesetze, die Umbildung der Mechanik von der spätmittelalterlichen Impetusphysik zur Vorstufe der klassischen Mechanik bei Galilei, sowie Galileis Eintreten für den Heliozentrismus. Dabei kommen sowohl die konkreten theoretischen Ansätze zur Lösung spezifischer empirischer Probleme zur Sprache als auch der weitere geistesgeschichtliche Hintergrund. Naturwissenschaftliche Vorkenntnisse sind nicht erforderlich.
