Unter den Verfahren der empirischen Sozialforschung gehört die Inhaltsanalyse in ihren verschiedenen Ausprägungen sicherlich zu den etabliertesten. Sie dient dazu, größere Mengen an Text statistisch auszuwerten und wird daher bevorzugt eingesetzt, um Tendenzen in Interviews, Zeitungen oder sozialen Netzwerken zu untersuchen. Die Entwicklung entsprechender Programme zur computergestützten Inhaltsanalyse hat ihren Einsatz deutlich vereinfacht und damit erheblich zur Popularität der Methode beigetragen. Deshalb ist die Inhaltsanalyse in den letzten Jahren auch vermehrt in der Historischen Forschung zur Anwendung gekommen, konnte sich bislang aber noch nicht im geschichtswissenschaftlichen Methodenkanon etablieren.
Ziel des Seminars ist es, die methodischen Grundlagen der Inhaltsanalyse anhand von Beispielen aus der vormodernen und modernen Geschichte kennen zu lernen. Zu Beginn des Kurses wählen alle Teilnehmenden ein eigenes Forschungsprojekt aus, das dann über das Semester hinweg bearbeitet wird und dazu dient, die Inhaltsanalyse einzuüben. Die methodische Ausrichtung dieser Projekte sowie die Fortschritte und Probleme bei ihrer Bearbeitung werden dabei immer wieder gemeinsam im Seminar diskutiert.
