Was heißt „Fremdsein“ in einer vormodernen Gesellschaft? Als fremd wahrgenommen zu werden, ist kein anthropologisch unveränderbares Phänomen. Gesellschaften organisieren Zugehörigkeit und Fremdsein auf unterschiedliche Weise, so dass die Analyse dieser Prozesse zentrale gesellschaftliche Strukturen und Symbolwelten und deren Verschiebungen sichtbar macht. Wer gilt als Auswärtiger in europäischen Gesellschaften zwischen 8. und 18. Jahrhundert und wie werden Fremdsein, Zugehörigkeit und Ausschluß bestimmt? Wann, wo, warum und mit welchen Folgen werden Menschen in Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit zu "Fremden"?
