The last decade has brought about a global pandemic with fundamental uncertainties, and growing concerns about social inequalities, rising polarisation, as well as the rise of populism and democratic backsliding in Western democracies. In many ways, public policies are crucial for these issues. This course brings together perspectives on public policy and democracy. In a first part, it will equip participants with theoretical and analytical perspectives on grasping questions at the policy-democracy intersection – amongst others, how democratic processes of policy design are, and how public policy outcomes can impact democracy. In a second part, we will connect this to different empirical cases, which participants can choose according to their own interests.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
